Sites of Memory Community Grants

Deadline

This fund aims to support community groups that are researching local connections to the history and impact of the transatlantic slave trade and wish to nominate places that could become future memorial markers.

Funding will enable groups to share their research with the public, such as through walking tours, digital or audio trails, films, community events, or online publications.

Constituted community groups or not-for-profit organisations that are based in Greater London and are working to explore and share legacies connected to the transatlantic slave trade can apply.

Funding will support organisations to share their research on the local legacies of enslavement with the public. This can include research into a person who lived in a certain part of London, a location that is historically important, or an important moment in the fight for liberation and abolition. This research will help find places for permanent memorial markers.

All projects should:

  • Be community-led, with clear involvement from Londoners in shaping the research and its public storytelling.
  • Be inclusive and accessible, inviting Londoners from all backgrounds to take part.
  • Focus on London's spaces and histories (ie, streets, parks, neighbourhoods, buildings, waterways, or other civic locations).
  • Share research in a public-facing and engaging way.

Projects can include but are not limited to:

  • Archival or local history research.
  • Oral histories or intergenerational storytelling.
  • Community workshops or research groups.
  • Collaborations with historians, archivists, artists, or academics.
  • Digital projects such as audio trails, interactive maps, short films, or online publications.
  • Public walking tours, talks, or exhibitions.
  • Creative interpretations that help bring historical research to life.

Eligible costs include:

  • Professional fees.
  • Venue hire.
  • Equipment and materials.
  • Digital costs (web hosting, audio production, software, etc.).
  • Staff time.
  • Volunteer expenses.
  • Transport.
  • Up to 10 per cent towards project overheads.
  • Access costs.

Proposed projects should take place between October 2026 and March 2028.
