Help preserve our stories and celebrate our heritage!

The French African Welfare Association (FAWA) is seeking a committed, enthusiastic and well-organised Project Coordinator to lead the day-to-day delivery of our Francophone African Heritage Project in South London.

Working in partnership with Southwark Archives, the project aims to preserve the stories, memories and lived experiences of older members of the Francophone African community, particularly those who migrated to the UK as refugees and migrants.

Through oral history interviews, intergenerational workshops, volunteer training and community events, the project will celebrate the community’s resilience, achievements and contributions while ensuring these important stories are preserved and shared with future generations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the day-to-day delivery of the 12-month heritage project, ensuring activities are completed on time and within budget.
  • Organise oral history interviews, intergenerational workshops, volunteer training sessions and community showcases.
  • Build relationships with older people, young people, volunteers and community organisations.
  • Coordinate the recording, documentation, storage and preservation of oral histories.
  • Support ethical consent procedures, safeguarding and confidentiality.
  • Recruit, coordinate and support project volunteers.
  • Work closely with Southwark Archives and other project partners.
  • Monitor participation, collect feedback and prepare progress reports for FAWA and funders.
  • Support the Community Heritage Advisory Group and attend quarterly meetings.
  • Attend meetings, partnership forums and networking events, representing FAWA and promoting the organisation’s work and project objectives.

Essential Requirements

The successful candidate will have:

  • Experience coordinating community, heritage, cultural or voluntary sector projects.
  • Strong organisational, communication and administrative skills.
  • Experience working with diverse communities and volunteers.
  • An understanding of safeguarding, confidentiality and ethical working practices.
  • The ability to build trust and engage sensitively with older people and community participants.
  • Good digital skills and the ability to maintain accurate project records.
  • The ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Fluency in English and either French or Lingala.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience in oral history, heritage, archives or community storytelling.
  • Knowledge of Francophone African communities and migration experiences.
  • Experience organising community events, exhibitions or workshops.
  • Understanding of data protection, informed consent and digital archiving.
  • Experience working with partner organisations and funders.
