In a new series of articles, KCSC will be introducing you to members of the team and letting you know a little about the work they do.
We start by meeting Nada Sallam who joined the team as Community Engagement and Participation Officer in April 2020.
Nada - Tell us about your role.
“I’m working on a new programme at KCSC, called Kensington and Chelsea Together, that's trying to support local people to get more involved in charities and community groups across the borough. The aim is to help people access opportunities that they may have been excluded from, and to help organisations become more diverse and representative of the people living here."
What are you working on at the moment?
“We're currently designing the programme and are trying to find local community members who are interested in getting involved. In fact, at the moment, there are three Steering Group positions open to people from the community who would like to have a say in the types of activities and support that the programme will offer."
Why is that?
"Well, first, we know the programme won't be very effective unless we understand and build on the opinions and experiences of people that live or work here. Second, if we’re honest, charities and other voluntary organisations are just not diverse or inclusive enough. There is such a rich mix of cultures, lifestyles and backgrounds in the borough, and we want to see more of that reflected in our organisations.”
What will the Steering Group do?
“The programme is managed by KCSC staff, but the Steering Group is there to help shape its design, and provide advice and insight into the needs of the local community. The Steering Group meets once every three months, gives the staff-team feedback on their work, and connects them with other members of the local community. Think of it like an advisory group.
Although it’s not a 'job', we know how important it is to pay people for their time, so we’re providing financial compensation and covering relevant expenses. The details are all in the role description we have on our website.”
How do people follow this up?
"If people are interested in getting involved, they can check out the role and other opportunities to share their ideas by following this link, or getting in touch with me at firstname.lastname@example.org or 020 3399 8162."
