Call for Specialist Facilitators - Maxilla Men's Shed

Maxilla Shed is a new NHS funded initiative responding to a need expressed by local people, particularly older men, in North Kensington and inspired by the international Men’s Shed movement

The primary aims of Maxilla Men’s Shed are to reduce social isolation and strengthen social support networks for all people, but especially men, in North Kensington. To help achieve this ACAVA are looking for skilled and experienced freelance tutors and facilitators to join a pool of people to deliver a comprehensive programme of training.

This exciting new project includes delivery of an annual training programme, teaching basic, and intermediate making skills to local people, around which a community can develop and be empowered. Skills could include carpentry and woodwork projects, upcycling and recycling and other craft-based mediums.

The programme will comprise of 6 x beginner courses, and 6 x intermediate courses per year. Each course will be delivered in 6 x 2-hour sessions from the Maxilla Men’s Shed, 4 Maxilla Walk, North Kensington, W10 6NQ. Session days and times will vary from course to course to widen the opportunity for local people to participate. The total facilitator fee for each course is £750. Equivalent to £125 per session, including planning and prep. An additional £200 is available for specialist equipment or materials.

Groups accessing the courses will be limited to 8 people, and depending on demand ACAVA may offer courses exclusively for men, women, adults with learning disabilities or vulnerable adults and other groups yet to be identified. Some places may be accessed via NHS social prescribing.

  • A basic course outline (no longer than 1 side of A4), including a brief breakdown of the sessions you’ll deliver, a paragraph on the skill you will teach and a list of equipment and materials you will need
  • An up to date CV, including details of any experience you have in education/ community/health settings
  • Up to three images that illustrate your practice and the technique you propose to teach
  • Details of two referees
