Learning the lessons of the Summer Riots

A number of recent studies have sought to provide a better understanding of the dynamics that led to nationwide rioting in August 2011.

• Guardian newspaper and London School of Economics - Reading the Riots

Based on interviews with those affected including victims and rioters. This comprehensive study examines the motivations of the perpetrators and the impact on the victims. 

• Joseph Rowntree Foundation - The riots: what are the lessons from the JRF's work in communities? 

These findings were originally published in September they are based on a review of JRF's back catalogue of research over the last 20 years on social and economic conditions, community engagement, regeneration and partnership in poor neighbourhoods, using evidence from hundreds of estates and neighbourhoods across the UK.

• Children's Society - Behind the Riots

Based on questioning of over 1000 adults and more than 1000 children aged 13 to 17. This research points to poverty being a key factor in the riots. It indicates that material well-being cannot be overlooked as a significant issue affecting young people today.
