The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has released the annual HIV infection rate statistics.
In 2010, 91,500 people were living with HIV in the UK. One in four was undiagnosed and unaware that they have HIV.
Sir Nick Partridge, Chief Executive of Terrence Higgins Trust, said: ‘HIV rates in the UK remain dangerously high and to bring them down we all have to take responsibility for our sexual health. We can’t just rely on partners, or chance, to keep sex safe.’
A key finding of the report was the large number of people being diagnosed with HIV late, at a point when they should have been on treatment. Late diagnosis disproportionately affects Africans. Find out more about how late diagnosis can impact on a person’s health.
